This innovative project aims to produce natural, safe, and sustainable food colorants by recycling and utilizing agricultural waste and by-products, and combining them with Omani frankincense (lubān ʿumānī) as a healthier alternative to synthetic colorants.
This was achieved through the integration of open data issued by several governmental and environmental entities, according to the following approach:
The North Al Batinah Municipality (Health Affairs Department – Food Inspection Samples Dataset): The results of food sample inspections from the municipal laboratory, along with the total number of analyzed samples, were used as the main reference to assess the extent to which our innovative product complies with food safety and health quality standards, and to ensure its conformity with standard specifications prior to market launch.
Oman Environmental Services Holding Company “Beeah” (Statistics on Recycled Waste): Recycling waste statistics and the number of factories by type of waste and their handling/absorptive capacity were utilized to analyze environmental and economic feasibility, and to guide organic and agricultural waste toward natural colorant production lines—supporting the circular economy system in the Sultanate.
Ministry of Health (Data on Deaths in Ministry of Health Institutions): This data was used and cross-referenced with global and local medical reports that link food additives and synthetic colorants with an increased risk of chronic diseases, in order to demonstrate the urgent health and preventive importance of providing 100% natural alternatives that protect society.
